Better live courses with a TV screen

January 23, 2021

Running a movement-intensive live course via a smartphone is difficult. You then only see your students on a very small screen and can hardly give individual assistance. So it makes sense to use a large TV screen. The video of your students is then so large that they can be seen in detail even at a distance of one meter and more. When selecting a TV screen, two aspects are important to ensure optimal course performance:

  1. The size of the screen

  2. The connection between the smartphone and the TV

The larger a screen is, the better it is suited for live classes. A screen diagonal of 60 inches is a good choice for most situations. Devices of this size are available for 600 euros and less and fit into almost any home or studio. Whether the TV uses LCD and OLED technology is irrelevant, as color fidelity is not critical for a live course. However, LCD devices are significantly cheaper in most cases.

In terms of the connection between smartphone and TV set, you need to pay attention to the following things. The liilix Pro app works differently with external devices on an iPhone than on an Android smartphone. However, a wireless connection offers the most flexibility in both cases.

Connecting an iPhone to a TV

You will need an iPhone with the iOS 10 operating system or higher. In addition, you need an Apple TV or a TV with built-in AirPlay. Some LG and Samsung TVs, for example, have Airplay built in if they were built after 2018. Provided they have either option set up, you can connect your iPhone to the appropriate device.

First, open the Control Center on your iPhone and enable screen sync by tapping on the corresponding item. You need to turn this feature on before you start a live session. Once ready, select your TV or Apple TV. Once they have successfully connected, place their iPhone on a stand next to the TV. Find a position for yourself from which you can clearly see the TV screen and the iPhone camera. Now start your live course.

Connecting an Android smartphone to a TV

You will need an Android smartphone with the Android 8 or higher operating system. In addition, you need a set-top box (e.g. Google Chromecast) or a TV set with built-in Google Cast. Many high-quality TVs have Google Cast already on board, for example, if they were built after 2017. As long as they have one of the two options set up, you can connect your smartphone to the corresponding device. First, open the Quick Settings on your smartphone and enable the Screen Share feature by tapping on the corresponding item. You need to turn this feature on before you start a live session. Once you are ready, select your TV or set-top box. Once they have successfully connected, place their smartphone on a stand next to the TV. Find a position for yourself from which you can clearly see the TV screen and the smartphone camera. Now start your live course.
